Does your social media have a double shot of visuals “to go” in a mobile friendly cup? If you haven’t read Visual Social Media Marketing: Harnessing Images, Instagram, Infographics, and Pinterest to Grow Your Business Online by Krista Neher, you might not get the picture when it comes to images and social media.
I caught up with Krista on a Facebook chat to find out What’s IN and OUT and she shared some of her latest Visual PR Secrets with me.
What’s IN and OUT in Visual Social Media by @KristaNeher
IN: Real photos of real things taken by real people work best for visual social media success
OUT: Stock photos that don’t match reality taken by professionals
We know that a photo of a Big Mac doesn’t look like what you actually get. Trends in images show that people want reality. If you look at Starbucks’ Facebook page for example, you see fewer pro photos and more photos that look like they were taken with an iPhone.
IN: User generated images.
OUT: Company generated images.
A case study on Lululemon found that website visitors were more likely to buy when they were exposed to user generated images, like Instagram photos.
IN: Short videos
Vine and Instagram are changing the way we think about video. When Twitter launched, people said you couldn’t convey any real thought or legitimate message in 140 characters or less. Now it is the norm. With video, we are going in the same direction. On YouTube, the standard video is around 2 minutes. Now we are seeing the growth of the 6 and 15 second videos. YouTube isn’t really “out” but we are definitely seeing an appetite for something new.

Visual Social Media Checklist
Images on your website and blog are important. In fact, articles and blog posts with images get 94% more total views than those without. But having slightly relevant stock photos is not enough if you want your content to travel effectively on Pinterest, Google+ and Facebook. What you need is a highly relevant and inspiring image that breathes life into the story.
Do you have the image content that people crave and that will help you be successful?
Are you posting images?
Are they interesting and relevant?
Do the images tell a story?
Are your images getting interactions?
Are your images gaining Shares/Retweets/Pins?
Do you have an image strategy for each social network?
